When I was a child, I loved Thunderbirds. I was especially thrilled by the launch sequences of Thunderbird 1 and 2. I remember being captivated by the mechanical aspects of the special effects from over 50 years ago, such as Thunderbird 1 launching from a pool, Thunderbird 2 loading containers, and the scene where palm trees fall to create a runway (which, in retrospect, seems completely pointless).

Perhaps that influence is why the launch sequence is my favorite scene in Gundam as well.

While the depiction of mechs in Gundam at the time of its broadcast wasn't exactly amazing, I think the sense of realism was thanks to the White Base's hangar.
