In September 0079 of the Universal Century, the Principality of Zeon began mass production of the MS-07B Gouf, a specialized close-combat model based on the Zaku IIJ type, developed for close-quarters combat between mobile suits on the ground. However, many experienced pilots called for the MS-07 to possess the versatility inherent to mobile suits. As a result, the development department reconsidered a machine based on the Prototype Gouf Unit 1 that placed emphasis on versatility and mobility. The result was the YMS-07A-2 Gouf Standard Custom, commonly known as the "A2 Gouf."
